Ethiopia’s federal government and Tigrayan forces have accused each other of launching offensives as renewed fighting raises fears of another major conflict four years after a peace agreement ended the war in the northern Tigray region.
The Tigray People’s Liberation Front said it was in a “full-blown war” with the federal government. Tigrayan fighters launched operations in the neighboring regions of Afar and Amhara, while fighting was reported along Tigray’s eastern border with Afar. Local authorities also reportedly took control of airports in Tigray, including the airport in the regional capital, Mekelle, following reports of recent drone strikes.
Ethiopia’s army said 272 Tigrayan fighters were killed in Amhara, according to Al Jazeera. The TPLF and federal authorities have each blamed the other for the escalation.
The clashes follow months of rising tensions between Mekelle and Addis Ababa. They also come after Tigrayan rebels announced a coalition aimed at overthrowing Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s government. The United Kingdom condemned attacks by Tigrayan forces across northern Ethiopia this week.
The previous war between federal forces and the TPLF lasted from 2020 to 2022. France24 and The Guardian reported that about 600,000 people died during that conflict before it ended with a fragile peace deal.
