President Donald Trump welcomed Chinese President Xi Jinping to the White House on Thursday for talks between the leaders of the world’s two largest economies.
The meeting began amid expectations that trade, artificial intelligence, Taiwan and other geopolitical issues would be discussed. Trump called the occasion a “big day” and described his relationship with Xi as a “truly great friendship,” according to Deutsche Welle and The Guardian. Xi said China and the United States should ensure artificial intelligence remains “always under human control,” The Guardian reported.
Senior U.S. officials attending included Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. Trump’s daughter Ivanka Trump was also present.
China’s leverage over rare-earth supplies formed part of the backdrop to the talks. Reuters reported that U.S. and Japanese officials had discussed Chinese restrictions on yttrium before the meeting. Separately, the South China Morning Post reported that Chinese chief executives had traveled independently to the United States while awaiting invitations to a state dinner for Xi.
John Bolton, Trump’s former national security adviser, expressed skepticism ahead of the visit, telling NewsNation that Trump “just wants to announce deals” and cautioning against immediately accepting any announced outcomes.
