Researchers at the University of Chicago’s Climate Impact Lab project that extreme heat associated with a “super El Niño” could cause as many as 451,000 additional heat-related deaths worldwide through February 2027, compared with a typical year.
The researchers expect the number of extremely hot days to rise by 44%. Nigeria, Indonesia and Sudan are among the countries projected to face the most severe effects, according to France24.
The estimate is a forecast rather than an observed death toll. Researchers also warned that the effects could continue beyond the period covered by their analysis.
