Starbucks plans to close approximately 250 stores across North America later this week, reducing its regional cafe portfolio by about 1%.
The coffee chain reviewed its North American locations and identified stores where it said it could not provide its intended customer experience or find a path to acceptable financial performance. Chief Operating Officer Mike Grams described the closures as a difficult decision in a company statement cited by Fast Company.
The closures are the latest stage of Starbucks’ turnaround and follow an earlier round of store reductions about a year ago. Starbucks operates more than 18,000 coffee shops in North America. The Seattle-area impact includes two locations in the company’s home city, according to KIRO 7.
The company is expected to carry out the closures this week. Specific locations beyond those reported in Seattle were not identified in the reports.
