U.S. diesel prices reached an all-time high Tuesday, averaging about $6.52 to $6.53 per gallon, according to CBS News and Fast Company.
Fast Company reported that diesel had risen roughly 77% from an average of $3.69 a gallon a year earlier. Regular unleaded gasoline was averaging about $4.50 a gallon.
Diesel is a major operating cost across the economy because it fuels heavy-duty trucks, tractors, ships and other equipment. Higher fuel expenses can therefore increase the cost of transporting and producing everyday goods.
The increase comes amid pressure on global energy supply routes. Al Jazeera reported strains extending from the Strait of Hormuz to the Black Sea, while Utah also recorded a new high for diesel prices, according to KSL.
