Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy defended attacks on Russian oil refineries and warned Moscow of further energy strikes if efforts to establish an energy truce fail, as he appealed at the United Nations for continued pressure on Russia.
“Our lives are more important than the price of energy,” Zelenskyy said in an interview with Wall Street Journal editor-in-chief Emma Tucker on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly. Reuters and the Kyiv Post reported that he also warned Russia could face a “painful” winter if talks aimed at halting attacks on energy infrastructure do not succeed.
In his U.N. address, Zelenskyy urged world leaders to reduce purchases of Russian oil and continue restricting Moscow’s revenues and ability to sustain its war. He described Russian President Vladimir Putin as “patient zero” for spreading war in the region, according to France24.
The appeals came as Russia continued attacks on Ukraine. NBC News reported that a drone assault on Kyiv before Zelenskyy’s address killed two people and wounded 41. Al Jazeera also reported Russian attacks on Ukraine during his appearance at the General Assembly.
