The Trump administration has formally invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to attend the Group of 20 summit scheduled for December in Miami, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Wednesday on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.
“We’ve invited President Putin to the G20,” Rubio told reporters. He described the gathering as an opportunity for Putin to engage with other world leaders. If Putin attends, it would be his first appearance at a major international summit of this kind since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Russia said it “truly” appreciated the invitation but had not decided whether Putin would attend, according to CNBC. The Kremlin had not publicly confirmed a response when the invitation was initially announced.
The move drew criticism from European leaders. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said inviting Putin could encourage further Russian aggression, Reuters reported. Several G20 members have previously called for Russia’s exclusion from the group over the invasion of Ukraine.
The European Union plans to condemn Russia’s war in Ukraine at the summit even if Putin attends, Deutsche Welle reported. The meeting is to be held at a Trump golf property in Miami.
