AI competition in focus as Trump and Xi meet

publishers 2articles 3first reported 22 Sep, 22:04 UTCdeveloping since 23 Sep · 4 editions

Artificial intelligence is a central issue as U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping meet in Washington, amid competition between the United States and China for technological leadership.

China is rapidly expanding the infrastructure needed to support its AI ambitions. The BBC reported on huge data centres rising in Inner Mongolia as Beijing pursues its rivalry with Washington. The two countries are also seeking ways to keep increasingly powerful AI systems under human control, according to the BBC.

Taiwan is also part of the discussions. The island, which China claims, is home to major semiconductor companies and advanced research facilities that produce and develop the powerful chips used in smartphones, computers and AI systems. France 24 reported from inside one of Taiwan’s state-of-the-art laboratories as Xi began his state visit.

The meeting brings together two closely linked issues: competition over AI capabilities and Taiwan’s role in semiconductors. Taiwan’s political future is expected to be on the agenda alongside artificial intelligence.
