James Copenhaver, who was wounded during the 2024 assassination attempt on Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, has died at age 76, his lawyer said Thursday.
Copenhaver died Wednesday at Allegheny Health Network’s West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh, according to a statement from the Allegheny County medical examiner cited by local media. A family statement issued through attorney Joseph Feldman said he died surrounded by loved ones but did not specify whether his death was directly related to the shooting.
Copenhaver was seated in the bleachers when a 20-year-old gunman opened fire from a nearby rooftop, grazing Trump’s right ear. Bullets struck Copenhaver in the arm and abdomen, requiring multiple surgeries and leaving him with lasting kidney damage, loss of feeling in one leg and the need to use a cane.
Two other rally attendees were shot. David Dutch survived, while Corey Comperatore was killed after shielding his family from the gunfire.
Copenhaver and his wife, Marianne, sued the federal government in June, alleging that the Secret Service and Department of Homeland Security failed to provide adequate security at the rally. The lawsuit described his injuries as permanent and life-altering.
Trump mourned Copenhaver in a social media post Thursday, calling him “a true American Patriot” who maintained a positive spirit despite severe hardship.
