Hurricane Nolo moved slowly toward Hawaii on Friday, threatening the Big Island and Maui with torrential rain, flooding and mudslides even though it was not forecast to make landfall over the weekend.
The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Nolo became a hurricane Thursday night. By Friday morning, it had maximum sustained winds near 85 mph and was moving north-northeast at about 5 mph, according to NPR. Forecasters expected the storm to strengthen over warm waters and potentially become a major hurricane as it slowed, turned west and gained speed during the weekend.
A hurricane watch was in effect for Hawaii County, meaning hurricane conditions were possible within 24 to 36 hours. Maui was under a tropical storm watch.
Forecasts called for the heaviest rain across the eastern and southern Big Island. NPR reported widespread totals of 10 to 25 inches, with more than 2 feet possible in some locations; Al Jazeera cited forecasts of 15 to 30 inches through Saturday, with higher isolated totals. Maui could also face heavy rain and dangerous flooding.
The threatened areas include the same southeastern part of the Big Island that was hit by Hurricane Lala in August, where saturated ground could worsen flooding. Hawaii’s governor issued an emergency proclamation and activated more than 230 National Guard members, Al Jazeera reported. Schools and government offices closed, shelters opened in Hawaii and Maui counties, and utility crews were repositioned to prepare for possible damage.
