President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping called for continued dialogue and cooperation on artificial intelligence during their Thursday meeting, according to a Chinese government readout cited by CNBC.

Xi said the two countries could exchange views on AI’s risks and benefits and work together to prevent its misuse and abuse. He also said AI should remain under human control and be developed to benefit humanity. The Chinese account said Trump agreed that the countries should maintain dialogue and strengthen cooperation on AI. The U.S. government had not released its own account of the talks when CNBC published its report.

The discussion followed weekend talks between U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and his Chinese counterpart, He Lifeng, about a possible bilateral AI dialogue, including an emergency communications channel for incidents reaching the national-security level. Aalok Mehta of the Center for Strategic and International Studies told CNBC that the summit appeared to produce an intention to keep talking, potentially alongside an emergency hotline, though detailed commitments remained unclear.

Several leading technology executives attended the state dinner, including Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, AMD CEO Lisa Su and Apple CEO Tim Cook. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, OpenAI President Greg Brockman, Google co-founder Sergey Brin and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella were also on the guest list.

The discussions occurred as Washington continues restricting China’s access to advanced Nvidia chips and both countries compete to develop increasingly capable AI systems.
