Hyundai Motor is expected to outsell Ford in the United States for the first time in a quarter, while Ford and General Motors lose market share, according to a Cox Automotive forecast released Thursday.
Cox projects Hyundai’s third-quarter sales will rise 6.5% from a year earlier to 511,421 vehicles, including the Genesis luxury brand and corporate sibling Kia. Ford’s sales are forecast to decline 7.1% to 504,172 vehicles. That would make Hyundai the third-largest automaker by U.S. sales for the quarter, behind GM and Toyota.
Ford said it remained ahead of Hyundai through August and argued that tariffs, currency, labor costs and supply chains currently favor vehicles built in South Korea. Ford has also faced reduced production of its F-Series pickups after two supplier fires last year disrupted operations.
Cox analysts attributed part of Ford’s and GM’s weaker performance to their limited hybrid lineups amid inflated gas prices. Ford sells hybrid versions of the Maverick and F-150 pickups, while GM’s only current hybrid offering is a Corvette. Toyota, a hybrid-market leader, has also been narrowing GM’s lead in U.S. sales.
Cox raised its 2026 U.S. new-vehicle sales forecast by about 2% to 16.1 million units, saying the market has been more resilient than anticipated.
