Volkswagen and its Audi subsidiary are recalling about 2.86 million vehicles worldwide because corroded bolts could damage the steering gearbox and, in some cases, cause a complete loss of steering.

According to Germany’s KBA road traffic authority, the recall covers about 2.16 million Volkswagen vehicles globally, including roughly 900,000 in Germany. Affected VW models include the Tiguan, Touran, Golf Variant, Caddy and Golf produced between September 24, 2013, and July 1, 2024.

Audi is recalling about 700,000 Q3 vehicles worldwide, including 58,555 in Germany. The affected bolts will be replaced with corrosion-resistant versions designed to withstand humidity.

Volkswagen said it expects the potential defect to affect only a smaller share of the recalled vehicles. The company said it was not aware of any accidents or injuries linked to possible bolt failures.
