The European Union imposed sanctions Thursday on Russian commentator and former RT France chief Xenia Fedorova, accusing her of disseminating pro-Russian narratives in France and across the bloc during Russia’s war against Ukraine.
The measures include an EU-wide asset freeze and a ban on entering or transiting through EU territory. EU individuals and organizations are also prohibited from making funds available to Fedorova, including salary payments.
According to the EU decision cited by Euronews, Fedorova promoted narratives portraying Western support for Ukraine as prolonging the war, Russia as seeking peace and Europe as pursuing confrontation. The Council also accused her of questioning established accounts of the unlawful transfer and deportation of Ukrainian children and depicting European and NATO policies as threats to European security.
The EU said Fedorova continued reaching French audiences through appearances on CNews, Europe 1 and Le Journal du Dimanche after RT’s broadcasting activities were suspended. France expelled her in August and had previously imposed an asset freeze, measures she challenged.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot welcomed the expansion of France’s measures across all 27 EU member states. The Kremlin criticized the sanctions as persecution, while Russia described them as illegal.
