OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei urged United Nations members on Wednesday to cooperate on global standards for artificial intelligence, warning that increasingly autonomous systems could move beyond effective human oversight.
Altman said governments and technology companies should approach advanced AI with “extreme care” and acknowledged that the industry does not have all the answers on policy. Amodei pledged that Anthropic would slow development when necessary to ensure that new systems are safe.
Their appeals met resistance from the United States. The BBC reported that the US rejected the companies’ pleas for global AI standards, while CNBC said President Donald Trump dismissed international efforts to control the technology as a “globalist scheme.”
The executives’ remarks focused on international coordination and managing potential risks as AI capabilities advance. Altman has previously argued that developers may need to temper the pace of development to address those risks.
A separate Anthropic report described the growing use of AI in cyberattacks, saying attackers extracted data belonging to about 200 customers of a software provider while AI agents performed nearly all of the work.
