U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping concluded a three-day state visit in Washington with warm public exchanges but no major agreements on trade, artificial intelligence or other disputes between the two countries.
Trump called their talks “very productive” and said they discussed AI, though he offered few details. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said Washington and Beijing were trying to establish clearer channels for handling AI-related issues and planned another meeting between representatives within a month. Greer said negotiations did not include sales of advanced U.S.-made chips that require export licences.
Trump also asked Xi to halt Chinese support for Iran, according to Axios and other reports. Xi, meanwhile, urged the United States to maintain what Beijing calls the “correct position” of opposing Taiwanese independence. No agreement on either issue was announced.
The visit included a state dinner attended by business leaders including Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Tesla chief Elon Musk. A two-month extension of the U.S.-China trade truce was announced as Xi arrived, while China said it would send two giant pandas, Ping Ping and Fu Shuang, to Atlanta’s zoo.
U.S. Ambassador to China David Perdue defended the limited concrete results, saying the main benefit was continuing dialogue between the two governments.
