Dr. Idris Evans, a pediatric critical care physician, was fatally stabbed and his wife was critically injured during an attack at their home outside Pittsburgh early Thursday, authorities said.
Allegheny County police responded at about 12:30 a.m. to the home in Edgewood and found the couple suffering from multiple stab wounds. Evans, 46, was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead. His wife remained hospitalized in critical condition.
The couple’s two children were inside the home during the attack but escaped without injury, police said. Authorities described a violent scene with broken bedroom furniture and mirrors and said they believe the assailant entered through a rear window and attacked the couple while they slept.
Police arrested Elijah Hemingway, 32, of Pittsburgh after a K9 unit located him behind a nearby home. He had cuts on his hand and was taken to a hospital, authorities said. Hemingway faces charges including homicide, aggravated assault and burglary. Police said it was unclear whether he knew the victims; Evans’ wife told investigators she did not know him.
Evans worked at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and was an assistant professor of critical care medicine at the University of Pittsburgh. A UPMC spokesperson called him a dedicated caregiver and valued member of the hospital and university communities.
