California Gov. Gavin Newsom met with international and business leaders in New York on Wednesday to promote climate action and clean energy on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly and New York Climate Week.

Newsom accused President Donald Trump of abdicating his responsibilities on climate change by prioritizing fossil fuels, reopening coal plants and pursuing additional oil drilling. He said state and local governments are leading and said China is gaining an economic advantage.

The White House rejected Newsom’s criticism. Spokeswoman Taylor Rogers defended Trump’s energy agenda and accused the California governor of supporting costly and unreliable policies while neglecting problems in his state.

In a separate interview with the Guardian and Covering Climate Now, Newsom criticized fellow Democrats for avoiding the subject of climate change. He said they should connect extreme heat, droughts and floods with household concerns such as food prices, jobs and other financial pressures. He also faulted the Biden administration for failing to communicate the effects of its climate policies effectively.

Newsom additionally discussed national politics, predicting major consequences for Trump in November’s midterm elections and calling for overwhelming voter turnout to prevent challenges to the results. He did not rule out running in 2028 if Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez decides to run, despite previously saying he would not run if former Vice President Kamala Harris did.
