Chinese President Xi Jinping said Thursday that two giant pandas will arrive at Zoo Atlanta within days, publicly confirming the timing of their move from China under a conservation loan agreement.
Xi announced the planned arrival of Ping Ping, a male, and Fu Shuang, a female, during opening remarks at the White House before talks with President Donald Trump. China and Zoo Atlanta had announced in April that the pandas would be sent to the United States, but had not specified when they would arrive.
Xi called the development “a piece of good news” and described the panda program as an example of friendship between Chinese and American people. The two animals were born at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding and are being loaned through an agreement between the zoo and the China Wildlife Conservation Association.
Their arrival will revive Zoo Atlanta’s panda program after Lun Lun, Yang Yang, Ya Lun and Xi Lun returned to China in 2024, ending the zoo’s previous 25-year partnership. Those departures briefly left the United States without any giant pandas. The Smithsonian’s National Zoo in Washington later received Bao Li and Qing Bao in October 2024.
