Kremlin Says No Decision Yet on Putin Attending Miami G20

The Kremlin said Russian President Vladimir Putin has not decided whether to attend the Group of 20 summit in Miami in December after the Trump administration invited him to the gathering.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the invitation Wednesday after meeting Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. Rubio said the summit could allow Putin to engage with President Donald Trump and other world leaders, adding that Washington hoped he would accept.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Thursday that Moscow appreciated the invitation but would review and coordinate it before reaching a decision. He called discussion of Putin’s possible meetings at the summit premature. Bloomberg separately reported that Putin planned to attend an APEC summit and skip the Miami G20 meeting.

The invitation drew criticism from some European officials. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said he feared Moscow could interpret it as encouragement to continue aggressive policies. European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas criticized efforts to normalize leaders responsible for wars.

An EU spokesman said the bloc would continue using G20 meetings to condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and call for the war to end, regardless of whether Putin attends. The spokesman also noted that Russia remains a G20 member and has the right to participate in its meetings.
