The Pentagon is investigating how a shipment containing parts from an F-35 stealth fighter was diverted to Hong Kong while being transported from Australia to the United States, according to reports from CBS News, CNBC and Bloomberg.
UPS was shipping a cockpit canopy and weapons bay door in late May when the cargo was redirected for reasons that remain unclear, CNBC reported, citing Bloomberg. Bloomberg reported that Chinese authorities are holding the components.
The parts were coated with radar-absorbing material used to enhance the aircraft’s stealth capabilities, according to people cited by Bloomberg. However, Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles said Tuesday that it was his understanding the missing shipment did not contain sensitive parts, CNN reported.
Marles said Australia was aware of the shipment and was working with the United States and F-35 manufacturer Lockheed Martin to determine how Canberra could assist with the investigation.
CNBC said Lockheed Martin, UPS and the Pentagon did not immediately respond to its requests for comment. The F-35 is a fifth-generation fighter manufactured by Lockheed Martin, and the United States restricts its sale to selected partners and allies, including Australia.
