Hurricane Nolo threatens Hawaii with catastrophic flooding and damaging surf

Hurricane Nolo strengthened to a Category 2 storm as it threatened Hawaii with torrential rain, flooding, mudslides and damaging surf. Forecasters said the storm was expected to pass near rather than directly strike the islands, but could bring as much as 25 inches of rain, with the heaviest rainfall forecast for Hawaii Island.

The National Hurricane Center warned that rainfall could cause “catastrophic life-threatening flooding and mudslides,” particularly in steep terrain. Tropical-storm conditions were expected as Nolo moved near the state, while large waves posed an additional threat along the coast.

Hawaii activated more than 230 National Guard members and closed schools ahead of the storm. The state’s emergency management agency urged residents and visitors to review emergency plans, replenish supplies, prepare for flooding, strong winds and power outages, and consider moving to safer areas.

Gov. Josh Green had requested an emergency declaration covering four counties to provide federal funding and support.

Nolo is the third hurricane to threaten Hawaii this season, after Lala in August and Lowell in early September, according to NPR. Some communities in the projected rainfall zone remain displaced or are still rebuilding after earlier storms.
