Six-year-old Lian Yunzhi of Chengdu, China, has reportedly set a women’s world record for the average time taken to solve a 3x3 Rubik’s Cube.
Chinese state broadcaster CCTV said Lian, known as “Zhizhi,” broke the women’s 3x3 average record twice in September at World Cube Association-certified competitions in Wuhan and Guangzhou. She recorded five-solve averages of 4.52 seconds and then 4.27 seconds, making her the first female speedcuber to average under 4.5 seconds, according to CCTV.
Video published by the broadcaster showed Lian rapidly completing the puzzle before clapping and raising a fist in celebration.
Her mother, Lin Yangxi, told local media that Lian was introduced to the Rubik’s Cube after enrolling in a class alongside other extracurricular activities. Lin later focused more of her daughter’s time on speedcubing after concluding that it helped develop a range of skills.
Lian has mastered more than 1,300 solving algorithms and practices for two to three hours each day, her mother told Chengdu-based Red Star News. Lin said solving the cube can strengthen concentration, memory, logical reasoning and spatial awareness while helping children learn how to handle winning and losing.
