Six people were killed after an explosion and apartment building collapse in Athens’ historic Plaka district, near the Acropolis.
Emergency crews recovered the bodies of three women and three men from the rubble on Saturday after the early Friday blast. The fire service had not formally identified the victims, but the Guardian reported that they included four American tourists and a British man and his Greek wife, who lived in an upstairs apartment.
The four Americans — two brothers and their wives — had been staying in a short-term rental and were reported missing after failing to board a flight to the United States. The British and Greek couple, aged 77 and 78, were also believed to have been inside when the building collapsed.
At least three other people were injured. The force of the explosion damaged nearby buildings, shops, vehicles and streets, prompting some evacuations.
Rescuers used search dogs, thermal cameras, geophones and excavators during the search. Authorities are investigating the cause of the blast. A gas leak is suspected, but the sequence of events was not immediately clear.
Athens Mayor Haris Doukas described the destruction as an “incredible disaster.”
