US and China Agree to AI Incident Channel After Trump-Xi Summit

The United States and China agreed to establish a bilateral communication channel for artificial intelligence incidents following a three-day summit between President Donald Trump and President Xi Jinping in Washington, DC.

The White House announced the agreement on Friday, and Deutsche Welle reported that China’s Foreign Ministry later confirmed it after Xi returned to Beijing. The ministry said the countries could strengthen exchanges and seek consensus as AI technologies develop. A new round of AI-focused talks is scheduled for November, according to Deutsche Welle. The summit did not produce a broader breakthrough agreement on AI.

The two governments also agreed to accelerate work on military crisis communications and extend an existing trade truce that had been due to expire in November. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the truce would remain in effect until January.

Both sides reported mutual tariff reductions covering about $30 billion in non-sensitive goods. The Trump administration also said China agreed to import at least 10 million metric tons of US coal in 2027 and 2028, while the countries discussed American concerns about rare-earth shipments.

Trump called the summit productive and said it strengthened his relationship with Xi. Xi said the countries should pursue strategic stability based on respect, fairness and reciprocity. The leaders are expected to meet again at the APEC summit in Shenzhen in November and the G20 summit in Miami in December.
