Rome’s Colosseum was closed to the public after a 22-year-old worker fell to his death while installing new lighting at the ancient amphitheater.

Andrea Moretti died following the overnight accident in the monument’s second-tier section. Italy’s Culture Ministry said authorities were working to determine the circumstances of the fall. The affected section was closed early Wednesday, and officials later shut the entire site after visitors had left. Reuters subsequently reported that the closure was extended for another day.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said she was “deeply shocked and saddened” by Moretti’s death and called for the cause of the accident to be clarified as soon as possible. “For a person to die at the age of 22 is unacceptable and even more so when it happens in the workplace,” she said.

Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli described the death as a “tragic event that has left us shocked and stunned.”

Built in the first century under the Roman Empire, the Colosseum is the world’s largest amphitheater and one of Rome’s most visited landmarks, receiving as many as 20,000 visitors a day during peak periods.
