Volkswagen and Audi recall millions of vehicles over steering risk

Volkswagen and Audi are recalling millions of vehicles worldwide because corrosion could cause bolts in their steering systems to fail, potentially damaging the steering gearbox or resulting in a complete loss of steering.
Deutsche Welle, citing Germany’s KBA road traffic authority and German media, reported that about 2.86 million vehicles are affected globally. That total includes roughly 2.16 million Volkswagen vehicles and 700,000 Audi Q3 models. Reuters and Automotive News reported a larger worldwide figure of 4 million vehicles, while AP, Euronews and Le Monde put the total at about 2.9 million.
In Germany, the recall covers approximately 900,000 Volkswagen vehicles and 58,555 Audi vehicles. The affected Volkswagen models are the Tiguan, Touran, Golf Variant, Caddy and Golf produced between Sept. 24, 2013, and July 1, 2024. NBC4 Washington and Fox Business reported that more than 208,000 vehicles are affected in the United States.
The recall calls for replacing the potentially vulnerable bolts with versions resistant to corrosion caused by humidity. Volkswagen said the fault was expected to affect only a small share of the recalled vehicles and that it knew of no accidents or injuries linked to the issue.
