Chinese President Xi Jinping concluded a three-day state visit to Washington on Friday with President Donald Trump, touring the National Archives to view the Declaration of Independence, Constitution and Bill of Rights.
Before the visit, Trump and first lady Melania Trump hosted Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, for tea at the White House. The couples had attended a black-tie state dinner Thursday following a 90-minute private meeting between the two leaders.
According to a Chinese government account, Trump and Xi discussed the Middle East, Ukraine and the Korean Peninsula. Trump said Friday that they had also discussed the war in Iran. The White House had not released its own detailed account of Thursday’s talks. ABC News reported that the visit produced no major breakthroughs on issues including trade and artificial intelligence safety.
Trump said the two sides had made “tremendous strides,” while Xi described the relationship as one that should be based on respect, fairness and reciprocity. Both leaders said they expected to meet twice more this year, at the APEC gathering in China and the G20 summit in Florida.
Xi and Peng departed from Joint Base Andrews after the Archives tour, according to Deutsche Welle, citing Chinese state news agency Xinhua and CNN.
