Eight U.S. Navy personnel assigned to the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group attempted suicide during its extended deployment, acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao said in a letter to Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand dated Tuesday.
Cao said no personnel died by suicide during the deployment. The eight attempts occurred across the broader strike group, which includes the carrier’s crew, its air wing, strike group and destroyer squadron staff, escorting destroyers and embarked aviation squadrons. In March, shipmates stopped one sailor from going overboard; another sailor who went overboard in August was rescued, treated and transferred off the ship for follow-up care.
The Lincoln spent 286 days at sea before its crew disembarked in Thailand on September 1. Its deployment, which included combat operations against Iran, had been scheduled to end in May but was extended. Reports during the deployment described worsening morale, supply delays and shortages of some basic goods. Cao acknowledged replenishment delays and said entrée choices were temporarily reduced from two to one, while four nutritionally balanced meals remained available each day.
Cao’s letter said the ship carried mental-health resources including five chaplains, a psychologist, a clinical social worker, three behavioral-health technicians and an integrated prevention counselor.
Gillibrand, a New York Democrat, accused President Donald Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth of dismissing reports about conditions. A Navy official told The Guardian that Navy leadership remained committed to sailors’ health, well-being and morale.
