Microsoft unveiled a redesigned Copilot app Friday that combines AI chat, coding and autonomous task tools in a single interface aimed primarily at business users.
The app integrates with Microsoft Office products, allowing users to ask Copilot to work on Excel spreadsheets or modify Word documents. Its new Code feature, built on the same technology as GitHub Copilot, is intended to help nontechnical users create apps, dashboards and other software. Another feature, Autopilot, will let users configure agents with names, roles and goals to perform tasks such as preparing project updates, tracking deadlines, reminding colleagues of commitments and communicating through Teams and Outlook.
Microsoft is consolidating capabilities that had previously been spread across products including Microsoft 365 Copilot and GitHub Copilot. Annie Pearl, Microsoft’s corporate vice president of Copilot, told Fortune that the company wants the app to become an “all-in-one productivity suite.”
A free version will be available, while full functionality will require Microsoft subscriptions or workplace licenses. Microsoft plans to charge separately, based on usage, for advanced Cowork, Code and Autopilot capabilities.
Most new features will initially be offered through testing programs. Code is expected to reach Microsoft 365 Premium and Pro subscribers in testing later this year, while Autopilot will have a more restricted test phase. Microsoft has not announced a date for broad availability.
