President Donald Trump praised “very productive” talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping as the Chinese leader concluded a three-day state visit to Washington, but the meetings produced no major breakthroughs on trade, artificial intelligence or other points of tension.
Trump gave Xi a lavish welcome, including a White House state dinner attended by business leaders such as Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Tesla chief Elon Musk. The two presidents publicly emphasized their personal rapport while describing their private discussions as frank.
The countries agreed to continue talks on artificial intelligence and technology-transfer licensing. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said representatives plan to meet on AI within the next month, with establishing clear channels of communication among the issues under discussion. Greer said negotiations did not cover licensed sales of advanced US-made chips to China.
Trump also asked Xi to halt Chinese support for Iran, according to Axios and other reports. The Guardian reported that Xi, in turn, urged Washington to oppose Taiwanese independence. A two-month extension of the US-China trade truce was announced as Xi arrived, but no broader trade agreement emerged.
Trump said Friday that he expects to meet Xi twice more before the end of the year, including at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meeting in China in November. Xi’s visit was scheduled to end after a tour of the National Archives, where the Declaration of Independence, Constitution and Bill of Rights are held.
