George Russell held off Max Verstappen by 0.196 seconds to win the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, securing his third Formula One victory of the season and the eighth of his career.
The Mercedes driver led throughout on the Baku street circuit, but two safety-car periods erased his advantage and set up a close finish. Verstappen, the four-time world champion, recovered from eighth on the grid and crossed the line nearly alongside Russell. Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar finished third on his return after missing three races with a wrist injury.
Championship leader Kimi Antonelli recovered to fifth after crashing in qualifying and starting 16th. His Mercedes teammate Russell cut Antonelli’s lead by 15 points to 66 after 15 rounds. Charles Leclerc finished fourth for Ferrari, while Lewis Hamilton placed sixth.
Racing Bulls rookie Arvid Lindblad was seventh, followed by Haas drivers Esteban Ocon and Oliver Bearman. Williams driver Carlos Sainz completed the top 10. Lando Norris crashed out, according to The Athletic’s race report.
The victory was Russell’s first since the Austrian Grand Prix at the end of June. “It’s amazing to be back on the top step of the podium,” he said after the race.
