U.S. President Donald Trump said Saturday that he had rejected an Iranian proposal to end hostilities and reopen the Strait of Hormuz under a seven-day timetable.
“I reject their proposal,” Trump told reporters at the White House, adding that the proposed deal “would not be acceptable.” His remarks followed reports that the plan had been transmitted to Washington through Qatari mediators after being presented during the UN General Assembly in New York.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the proposal called for hostilities across the Middle East, including in Lebanon, to cease before the strait reopened on the seventh day of a truce. He said its conditions included the release of frozen Iranian assets, the removal of sanctions on Iranian oil and an end to the U.S. naval blockade of Iranian ports.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian told CBS News that the initiative had been developed in coordination with Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei and could have begun as soon as the United States accepted it.
Earlier, a U.S. official told Reuters that indirect discussions with Iran had been “positive and constructive.” Trump, however, said Iran wanted the waterway reopened immediately and maintained that the United States was prevailing in the conflict.
The Strait of Hormuz remains largely closed to international shipping. Oil prices rose Saturday, though reports of discussions over a phased reopening limited the gains.
