The United States and China agreed to extend their trade truce through Jan. 10, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Wednesday as Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Washington for a state visit.
The arrangement had been scheduled to expire Nov. 10. It has kept tariffs lower and limited Chinese export controls on rare earths. Bessent said the two sides could negotiate a broader economic package by January or extend the existing terms again, but added that China had not fully delivered on parts of the agreement.
Bessent announced the extension after meeting Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng. China’s Commerce Ministry later confirmed that senior negotiators had discussed reducing tariffs and extending existing trade arrangements, describing the talks as constructive and candid.
Officials also held their first discussions on artificial intelligence. Bessent said the countries considered establishing a dialogue and a system for alerting each other about AI-related risks or incidents. AI was also expected to feature in talks between Xi and President Donald Trump.
Trump welcomed Xi at Joint Base Andrews at the start of the Chinese leader’s three-day visit. In a statement reported by China’s state-run Xinhua news agency, Xi said the two countries should be partners rather than rivals and should manage their differences while building a stable relationship. Bessent said additional agreements could be announced during the visit, potentially involving U.S. agricultural purchases and financial services.
