Michigan Orders Review After Driver Dies Following Attempted ICE Traffic Stop

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has directed state police to review the circumstances surrounding a fatal crash that followed an attempted Immigration and Customs Enforcement traffic stop in Grand Rapids on Sunday.
Mario David Coronado Juarez, a 36-year-old Guatemalan national, died after his vehicle struck a tree at high speed and caught fire. The New York Times reported that Coronado was not the target of the ICE search.
The Department of Homeland Security said ICE officers attempted to stop the vehicle to confirm the driver’s identity. According to DHS, Coronado fled at high speed and officers immediately discontinued the enforcement action in the interest of public safety. The agency said officers later saw smoke about half a mile from the attempted stop and found the crashed vehicle. Some reports and officials have characterized the incident as a pursuit.
Grand Rapids Police Chief Joseph Trigg requested assistance from Michigan State Police, saying local traffic investigators had been limited in obtaining information from federal agencies. Democratic Rep. Hillary Scholten also asked ICE to explain its agents’ actions and called for a transparent investigation.
Immigration advocacy group Movimiento Cosecha said Coronado was a construction worker from San Marcos, Guatemala, who sent money to his wife and three young children.
