Diesel prices are climbing across the United States and Europe. Brent crude reached $104.67 a barrel by 10 a.m. Eastern on Sept. 24, up $2.64 from the previous morning and about $36 from a year earlier, according to Fortune.

The average diesel price in the European Union has reached a record €2.23 per litre, France 24 reported. Fortune said European consumers are spending an additional €203 million ($231 million) a day on diesel, citing the advocacy group Transport & Environment, while pump prices have exceeded the equivalent of $12 a gallon in some countries.

In the United Kingdom, average diesel prices have risen 38% since February to £1.96 a litre, Carbon Brief calculated from government figures. Petrol has increased 31% to £1.72. Carbon Brief attributed the increases to oil prices above $100 as the conflict between Yemen’s Houthis and Saudi Arabia escalates. Its analysis estimated that driving an electric vehicle on an off-peak home tariff costs 2.3 pence per mile, compared with 21 pence for diesel.

Governments and companies are responding with subsidies, tax changes and other measures. Italy’s Eni will cap diesel at €2.19 per litre and petrol at €1.99 at Enilive stations from Sept. 28 for an initial 30 days. Italian ministers also called an Oct. 8 meeting with refinery operators to discuss increasing domestic production. In the United States, Utah has recorded a new high for diesel prices, according to KSL.
