An intensifying nor’easter brought violent surf and coastal flooding to parts of the East Coast, battering North Carolina’s Outer Banks on Thursday.
Pea Island experienced overwash and pavement damage along N.C. 12, forcing the highway to close. Island Free Press reported that the road remained closed on Pea Island while no major highway overwash was reported farther south on Hatteras Island.
The damage could leave Hatteras Island cut off for weeks, according to 13News Now. The storm also reached the site of a $42 million Outer Banks coastline restoration project, WRAL reported.
