The Kremlin said Russian President Vladimir Putin has not decided whether to attend the G20 summit in Miami after the United States invited him to the December meeting.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed the invitation Wednesday following talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. Rubio said the summit could allow Putin to engage with President Donald Trump and other world leaders.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Thursday that Moscow appreciated the invitation but would review it before reaching a decision. He called discussion of a possible meeting involving Putin, Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky premature. Bloomberg, however, reported that Putin plans to attend an APEC summit hosted by Chinese President Xi Jinping and skip the G20 meeting with Trump.
The invitation drew objections in Europe and the United States. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas criticized efforts to normalize relations with leaders who launch wars, while Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk warned that Moscow could interpret the invitation as encouragement. An EU spokesman said the bloc would continue condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine at the summit regardless of who attends.
A bipartisan group of 13 U.S. senators, including six Republicans, also urged Trump to rescind the invitation, arguing that Putin’s attendance would grant him “stature and legitimacy” while the war continues. The G20 leaders’ summit is scheduled for Dec. 14-15 in Miami.
