A one-year-old child has died in a Sydney hospital five days after an alleged stabbing in the Blue Mountains, New South Wales police said. The child’s 42-year-old mother is expected to face an additional murder charge.
Bystanders found the woman and her three children with stab wounds inside a vehicle at Valley Heights, west of Sydney, on Sunday afternoon. Witnesses provided first aid until emergency services arrived, but a five-year-old child died at the scene.
The one-year-old and a three-year-old sibling were hospitalized with serious injuries. Police said Thursday evening that the infant had died and the three-year-old remained in critical condition. The woman was also taken to Westmead Hospital following the incident.
She was charged Tuesday with domestic-violence murder and two counts of causing grievous bodily harm with intent to murder. Police said she was refused bail and is scheduled to appear in Penrith Local Court on Nov. 20.
The alleged domestic-violence incident is being investigated by Blue Mountains Police Area Command under Strike Force Karelo. Police said the woman had not previously come to their attention and that investigators were not seeking anyone else in connection with the case.
