U.S. President Donald Trump said Saturday that he had rejected Iran’s proposed seven-day roadmap to end hostilities, reopen the Strait of Hormuz and resume negotiations over Tehran’s nuclear program.
“I reject their proposal,” Trump told reporters outside the White House, according to Al Jazeera. He said he remained interested in an agreement but considered Iran’s offer unacceptable. His comments followed reports that he was privately skeptical of the initiative and expected a renewed bombing campaign on Iran after the November midterm elections.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran submitted the proposal through Qatar, which has mediated indirect contacts between the two countries. Under the plan, the United States would observe a ceasefire, including in Lebanon, lift its naval blockade of Iranian ports, waive sanctions on Iranian oil sales and release billions of dollars in frozen Iranian assets. Iran would then restore normal passage through the Strait of Hormuz and begin talks with Washington on Iran’s nuclear program.
Araghchi said the seven-day timeline would begin once Washington accepted the proposal. The conditions largely echoed those in an earlier U.S.-Iran understanding reached in June, which collapsed after fighting resumed.
The latest initiative followed indirect talks in New York during the United Nations General Assembly. U.S. officials had described those discussions as positive and constructive, while Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Tehran remained willing to negotiate but would not accept coercion.
