EU Warns Against Possible U.S. Diesel Export Restrictions

publishers 13articles 19first reported 23 Sep, 18:04 UTCdeveloping since 22 Sep · 6 editions

The European Union has warned that potential U.S. restrictions on diesel exports could raise costs and disrupt fuel markets on both sides of the Atlantic, as President Donald Trump’s administration considers ways to lower record domestic prices.

Trump has publicly called for keeping more U.S.-produced diesel at home, while reports indicate the White House is considering measures including a 90-day export ban. U.S. diesel recently reached a record average of about $6.52 a gallon. Energy Secretary Chris Wright has also asked the oil industry to curb exports, according to Politico, but has described an outright ban as a “blunt tool” that could damage U.S. fuel supplies over the longer term.

European Commission spokesperson Olof Gill said any disruption could “negatively impact both sides” and urged close partners to consult before taking measures affecting shared markets.

Europe has become increasingly dependent on U.S. diesel as supplies from refineries in Russia and the Middle East have fallen. The Guardian reported that the United States supplied about one-third of Europe’s diesel imports this year and roughly half by August. Europe produces about 70% of the diesel it consumes and maintains reserves, making widespread shortages unlikely, but analysts said replacing U.S. cargoes would probably push global prices higher.

The proposal also faces opposition from the U.S. oil and gas industry and critics who argue that lower refinery margins could eventually discourage production, reducing domestic supply and raising prices after any immediate relief.
