The White House excluded CNN from Air Force One for President Donald Trump’s Saturday trip to Knoxville, Tennessee, replacing the network in its guidance with conservative outlet Real America’s Voice News.
CNN had been scheduled to represent the five-member U.S. network television pool, whose members rotate responsibility for recording and distributing video of the president. Real America’s Voice is not a member of that pool. A written pool report Saturday morning said there was “no TV pool” for the trip, although Real America’s Voice said it would make its footage available to other news organizations. HuffPost reported that LindellTV was also designated as a secondary pool outlet.
Trump traveled to Knoxville to attend a college football game between the University of Tennessee and the University of Texas. In a social media post Saturday, he wrote that “FAKE NEWS SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED IN THE WHITE HOUSE.” The White House did not provide additional comment to several news organizations.
The move followed Trump’s decision last week to bar CNN, MS NOW and Politico from White House grounds. The outlets sued, alleging violations of their First Amendment rights. U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly temporarily blocked that ban Thursday, finding that the administration had not supported its national-security rationale. His order addressed White House press passes but did not explicitly cover pool assignments or access to Air Force One. An attorney for the outlets said they believe the ruling also applies to pool access.
