A powerful September nor’easter brought coastal flooding, heavy rain and high winds to the Northeast on Saturday, cutting power and disrupting travel and major events as forecasters warned that severe conditions would continue into Sunday.
Nearly 80,000 customers were without electricity across New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and Massachusetts by Saturday evening, NPR reported, citing PowerOutage.com. More than 1,000 flights were canceled and thousands were delayed, according to FlightAware. Downed wires and rough conditions also forced Amtrak train cancellations and disrupted ferry service around Cape Cod and Rhode Island.
New Jersey and New York declared states of emergency in multiple counties, including New York City. Floodwater inundated streets in New Jersey and New York, while one Atlantic City resident told NPR that waves reached halfway up the steps of her home. More than 33 million people from Virginia to Rhode Island were in areas under coastal flood alerts, according to Fast Company.
The National Weather Service expected the storm to keep affecting the Jersey Shore, New York City and eastern Massachusetts through Sunday. Coastal gusts could reach 60 mph, and winds above 35 to 40 mph could persist for about 48 hours, an NWS meteorologist told NPR.
Organizers canceled Maryland’s Oceans Calling music festival, rescheduled an AC/DC concert in New Jersey and moved a Boston Red Sox game against the Chicago Cubs because of the weather.
