President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping concluded a three-day state visit in Washington on Friday with a short extension of an existing trade truce but few other concrete agreements.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the United States and China agreed to extend the truce until Jan. 10. The arrangement had lowered U.S. tariffs and suspended Chinese export controls on rare earths and critical minerals. Beijing’s account of the talks referred to a new bilateral trade arrangement but did not specify a date. Xi also promised to send two pandas to Atlanta.
The leaders discussed Taiwan and the wars in Iran and Ukraine, according to The Guardian, but announced no major outcomes on those issues. They also did not establish an agreement or formal framework addressing artificial-intelligence risks. Xi said the countries had a responsibility to manage AI for good and keep it under human control, while Trump later said Xi appeared receptive to his preferred term, “super intelligence.”
Ceremonial events dominated the visit. Trump greeted Xi at Andrews Air Force Base, hosted a state dinner attended by technology executives, showed him White House construction projects and joined him for a visit to the National Archives.
Trump described the talks as productive and said U.S. farmers would benefit, without providing details. The two presidents pledged to meet again this year, including at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Shenzhen in November and the Group of 20 summit in Miami in December.
