Bill Gates called for US lawmakers and law enforcement agencies to help regulate artificial intelligence, warning that the technology could cause mass casualties if misused.
In an interview with NBC’s Kristen Welker scheduled to air Sunday, the Microsoft co-founder said oversight should not be left solely to AI companies. “No one thinks self-regulation is enough,” Gates said, according to excerpts circulated by NBC. He urged government officials to participate in determining what safeguards and monitoring should be required.
Gates acknowledged that mandatory oversight would add some costs for the industry but said it would not dramatically slow AI development. “It will be a little bit of overhead for the industry,” he said.
He also warned that malicious actors using advanced AI tools could have unprecedented destructive power. AI is “certainly powerful enough to drive events that, you know, cause a billion deaths,” Gates said, adding that there had “never been a weapon as powerful as the combination of people with ill intent using the latest AI tools.”
The remarks follow an essay Gates published in August about potentially lethal risks posed by AI on a large scale.
