Dozens of diplomats walked out of the United Nations General Assembly as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu delivered a defiant address defending Israel’s military campaigns in Gaza, Iran and Lebanon.
Netanyahu rejected allegations that Israel has committed genocide in Gaza and told departing delegates, “If there are any other moral cowards who haven’t left the hall, please do so now.” A Palestinian representative quoted by JOE said the walkout was organized to protest Israel’s conduct in Gaza and its occupation of Palestinian territory. The UN does not maintain an official list of delegations that leave speeches.
During the nearly hour-long address, Netanyahu praised US President Donald Trump and defended attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities. He also criticized Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, accusing Turkey of hosting Hamas and illegally occupying northern Cyprus. Netanyahu had met Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis shortly before the speech.
Netanyahu also called New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani antisemitic, accused him of supporting Hamas and claimed Jewish residents felt less safe since his election. Mamdani responded that Netanyahu had repeated “baseless lies,” while noting that the International Criminal Court has issued a warrant accusing the Israeli leader of war crimes and crimes against humanity.
About 100 people were arrested during protests against Netanyahu’s visit in Midtown Manhattan, according to NPR. Netanyahu subsequently returned to Israel after meeting relatively few world leaders during his New York trip.
