Iran said Sunday it was maintaining its conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz despite U.S. President Donald Trump’s public rejection of a seven-day proposal presented during the U.N. General Assembly in New York.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran had not received a formal response through mediators and would wait for Washington’s definitive position. The proposal, transmitted through Qatar, called for reopening the strategic waterway and resuming negotiations if the United States lifted its blockade of Iranian ports, eased oil sanctions, released frozen Iranian assets and met other ceasefire conditions. Iran also linked the plan to an end to regional hostilities.
Trump told reporters Saturday that the proposal was “not acceptable,” saying Iran wanted an agreement because it was “losing so badly.” U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz said Sunday that Iran had sought extensive sanctions relief before substantive negotiations and that Trump was not confident Tehran was negotiating in good faith.
Araghchi said diplomacy remained possible but that Iran would not retreat from its stated conditions. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Tehran was prepared to discuss its nuclear program and other issues but would not accept coercion.
The strait, a major route for global oil and gas shipments, has been severely disrupted since fighting began in February. Iran requires vessels to use routes it authorizes, while Washington says U.S. forces are escorting commercial shipping through a separate route and enforcing a naval blockade of Iranian ports.
