Late Gakpo goal denies Klopp victory in Germany debut

Jürgen Klopp’s first match as Germany coach ended in a 1-1 draw with the Netherlands after Cody Gakpo scored an injury-time equalizer in their Nations League opener.
Dutch captain Virgil van Dijk had an early headed goal ruled out before Lukas Nmecha put Germany ahead with a close-range finish. The Netherlands created the better chances for much of an occasionally ill-tempered contest, while Germany appeared vulnerable defensively and failed to take control after scoring.
Germany’s attacking options were reduced when Jamal Musiala withdrew during the warmup and Kai Havertz was injured in the first half. Klopp also handed international debuts to Younes Ebnoutalib, Yannik Engelhardt and Philipp Treu as he continued assessing his squad.
“It felt mostly good,” Klopp told German broadcaster RTL, adding that he could “live with the point.” He said he was highly satisfied with many individual performances but acknowledged that Germany could play better football and create more chances.
Klopp, the former Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund manager, replaced Julian Nagelsmann following Germany’s latest World Cup campaign. He has selected two different squads for four Nations League matches during the extended international period.
