Venezuela’s acting President Delcy Rodríguez promised elections during an address to the United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday but did not set a date, saying Venezuelans would determine the “right moment” for a vote.
“Elections will be held in Venezuela,” Rodríguez said. She said her government had begun a political dialogue with opposition sectors aimed at establishing equal conditions and that state institutions would be ready to guarantee an inclusive and transparent process.
Rodríguez described the planned vote as part of a transition to “full democracy” and said Venezuela needed to move beyond past political conflict. She also thanked U.S. President Donald Trump for his willingness to resume diplomatic relations and cooperation, including in energy, security, efforts against transnational crime and economic affairs.
Rodríguez met briefly with Trump on the sidelines of the General Assembly on Tuesday, according to Al Jazeera, with the two discussing issues including restructuring Venezuela’s sovereign debt.
She became acting president after a U.S. military raid in January captured Nicolás Maduro and brought him to the United States to face drug-trafficking charges. Maduro remains in custody awaiting trial. Rodríguez’s visit was the first by a Venezuelan head of state to the United States since Maduro attended the General Assembly in 2018.
