South African police were searching for suspects Sunday after two separate mass shootings hours apart killed 27 people and injured 26 near Johannesburg and Cape Town.
In the first attack Saturday evening, eight gunmen armed with assault rifles stormed a tavern near Johannesburg, killing 17 people and injuring 15, according to the BBC and France 24. The attackers fired at customers outside before continuing inside, then torched two vehicles and fled, according to the BBC. Police said 13 men and four women were killed.
Deputy provincial police commissioner Maj. Gen. Fred Kekana said authorities had clear images and, in some cases, names of suspects. He said the shooting may have been retaliation for an incident the previous month in which one person was killed and another wounded, according to an AFP account cited by the BBC. France 24 reported that initial investigations suggested one shooting may have involved a turf war between illegal miners.
Hours later, gunmen opened fire outside an entertainment venue in a township near Cape Town, killing 10 people and injuring 11. Five victims died at the scene and five later died in hospital. France 24 said the other could have stemmed from a business rivalry.
Police had not announced a confirmed motive or any arrests in either case as of Sunday morning.
